5 Tips for Your First Cyclocross Race
So you decided you want to enter the crazy world of cyclocross? Cyclocross is a lot of fun, but it’s also pretty intense. Here are 5 tips to make sure there won’t be too many surprises at your first race.
Pre-Ride the Course
Cyclocross courses are known to throw everything at you. It is a really good idea to get to the course early enough to pre-ride the course so you know what you’re in for.
Practice Cyclocross Barriers
What’s so hard about going over a little wall with your bike? It’s a lot harder than it looks. Practice carrying your bike over barriers BEFORE raceday. Curbs or parking barriers are a great way to practice.
Practice Mounting and Dismounting
In a cross race you will have to get on and off your bike A LOT during the race. It’s a good idea to head to a grassy area and practice mounting and dismounting your bike as fast as possible. Make sure you can also get into your pedals quickly.
Get a Good Warmup
The intensity will be high the entire race, so get a good warmup while you are pre-riding the course.
Make sure you are well hydrated before the race because it will be pretty difficult to get a drink during the race with all of the turns and barriers.
