Road BIKE MAINTENANCE: DERAILLEURs & Brakes

Following is an easy tutorial to tune your road bike. If you have any more questions, please contact us.

Before you begin, put your bike in a position so that the rear wheel spins freely (ideally on a bike repair stand, or if you don't have one, then on a bike rack on your car, or turn it upside down)

Rear Derailleur Quick Tune - Road Bikes

Step 1

Shift to the middle chainring on the front and the high gear (smallest gear) on the back.

Step 2

While slowly turning the pedal, shift the Right Silver Shifter one click. The chain should move to the next bigger gear on the rear. If it doesn't proceed to Step 3. If it does, then shift the Right Silver Shifter one more click. Each time you click it, it should move to the next bigger gear. Whenever it doesn't, then proceed to Step 3.

Step 3

While continuing to pedal, slowly turn the Rear Barrel Adjuster COUNTER-CLOCKWISE until the chain moves to the next gear. After it goes to the next gear, repeat Step 2. (Note: the Front Right Barrel Adjuster located just behind the fork on the right side of the downtube.)

That's it! Whenever your rear gears aren't shifting smoothly, this quick adjustment may be necessary. Why do this? All cables tend to stretch as you use them, particularly in the beginning. Cable stretching causes the gears to not shift as smoothly. By turning the Barrel Adjuster COUNTER-CLOCKWISE, it tightens the cable.

Front Derailleur Quick Tune - Road Bikes

Do the front gears not shift smoothly to the biggest chainring (gear) on the front? Or, is the derailleur rubbing on the chain? If so, go through the following steps:

Step 1

Shift to the middle chainring on the front and the high gear (smallest gear) on the back.

Step 2

While slowly turning the pedal, shift the Left Silver Shifter (Brake Lever) one click. The chain should move cleanly to the biggest gear on the front. If it doesn't proceed to Step 3.

Step 3

While continuing to pedal, slowly turn the Front Derailleur Barrel Adjuster COUNTER-CLOCKWISE until the chain moves cleanly to the next gear or until is stops rubbing.

You're done! That's all there is to it!

Note: if for some reason, the above doesn't work, there may be another very easy adjustment (like the high and low limit screws). Please contact us and we'll be happy to guide you through it.

Brake Quick Tune - Road Bikes

Brakes too soft? Do the brake levers squeeze in too far? Follow these simple steps:

Step 1

Make sure Brake Quick Release Lever is in the Closed Position (as shown in picture below), then turn Brake Barrel Adjuster Counter-Clockwise to tighten brake cable.
